Medical Requirements & Regulations

The Medical Examination is mandatory for safety reasons based on:

  1. National Legislation: Safety standards for underwater activities (Ministry of Development Order, October 14, 1997, BOE No. 280, Article 25).
  2. Regional Legislation (Andalusia): Decree 216/2003 (Sports-recreational diving) and Decree 28/2002 (Professional diving).
  3. Andalusian Sports Law 6/1998: Ensuring health control and medical care to guarantee the safety of athletes.
  4. European Legislation: Great Britain (E.D.T.C. standards).

The Initial Medical Examination

A proper initial check-up must include:

  • Directed Anamnesis (Medical history and signed questionnaire).
  • General exploration: Vital signs and anthropomorphic parameters.
  • Cardiorespiratory, neurological, dental, and skin examinations.
  • E.N.T. (Ear, Nose, and Throat): Otoscopy.
  • Psychological assessment.
  • Recommended: ECG, Spirometry, Chest X-ray (PA & L), and blood analysis.

Medical Questionnaire (Key Questions)

The candidate must answer (YES/NO) regarding:

  • Difficulties equalizing ears (diving or planes).
  • History of decompression accidents or barotrauma.
  • Conditions: Diabetes, asthma, pneumothorax, epilepsy, or loss of consciousness.
  • Cardiac issues: Murmurs, arrhythmias, chest pain, or hypertension.
  • Psychological factors: Claustrophobia, anxiety, or nervous disorders.
  • Current status: Medications, smoking/alcohol habits, or pregnancy.

Contraindications & Frequency

Absolute & Permanent Contraindications: Spontaneous pneumothorax, Epilepsy, Cystic lung disease, Bullous bronchopneumopathy, or history of acute hypoxic encephalopathy.

Examination Validity:

  • Scientific Diving: Every 2 years.
  • Recreational Diving: Every 2 years.
  • Professional Diving: Every 1 year.
